At the cinema with friends,
Excluding yourself of course,
She had just as good a time
As when she once went with you.
At the party she hosted,
To which you weren’t invited,
She drank and guffawed no less
Than when you cast shadows there.
Sitting alone on her porch
Gazing at stars, drinking wine,
She was as pleased with her world
As when you were part of it.
You extricated yourself,
And your ego makes believe
You have castigated her
With your spectacular spite.
How you’ve misjudged your value.
As your hurtful surprise dies,
Your departure grows comic,
And her being enlarges.
As dishes pile up in your sink
And you binge watch your TV,
You’ll know more ache than she,
And she won’t return your calls.
